The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has commenced with May 2025 social grant payments. Millions of people living in the country will receive grant payments this week.
Sassa distributes over 18 million permanent grant payments, including the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid. This is in addition to the approximately 8 million individuals who receive the temporary Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant.
Consistent with Sassa’s grant payment policy, older persons' grant beneficiaries will be paid first on Tuesday, 6 May 2025.
Grants payments for disability grant beneficiaries will be paid on Wednesday, 7 May 2025 and children's grant beneficiaries will be paid on Thursday, 8 May 2025.

May Grant Payments Could Be Delayed
Sassa revealed that social grant beneficiaries May 2025 grant payments will be delayed.
The grant payment agency said the delay is intended to encourage affected individuals to visit local Sassa offices to verify their personal details and update information about their financial circumstances.
This is being done to ensure that only eligible individuals continue receiving support.
Sassa warned that beneficiaries who do not visit Sassa offices to verify their details will have their grant payments suspended.
Failure to do so may result in suspension of grants, and if uncorrected, the grant may eventually lapse,
If beneficiaries fail to visit a Sassa office while their grant payments are sustained will lead to their grants lapsing. They will then be required to reapply for social grant payments.
Sassa Grant Amounts For May 2025
During the annual Budget Speech Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced the 2025 Sassa grant increases.
The first round of Sassa grant increases were implemented in April, with several grants set to increase later in the year.
With the Sassa increase in place, Sassa grant payments for April and the coming months will be:
- Old person Grant- R2310
- Older Persons Grant (over 75) - R2330
- War Veterans grant - R2330
- Disability grant - R2310
- Foster care grant - R1250
- Care dependency grant - R2310
- Child support grant - R560
- Child support grant top-up - CSG + R280
- The grant-in-aid - R560
There has been no increase for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant. May 2025 SRD grant payments will remain at R370.
