The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has dismissed reports that students will receive their September NSFAS allowances late. They’ve labelled these reports as fake news and are confident that students will receive their monthly allowances in good time.

NSFAS is currently paying allowances to more than one million students enrolled in approved programs at public universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges around South Africa.

It was therefore concerning for students when reports surfaced that students would face a delay in the payment of allowances this month. Allowances provided by NSFAS aim to cover the costs students may incur while they pursue their tertiary education qualifications.

Students receive a living allowance, accommodation allowance and a learning material allowance. Students who do not live in residences receive a transport allowance from NSFAS

These students are beneficiaries of the comprehensive bursaries provided by NSFAS. Aside from the allowances students receive, their tuition and registration fees are also paid by NSFAS

NSFAS slammed reports that claim allowances payments will be delayed to 5 September 2023 due to “delays between NSFAS and service providers”.

Please note that this is a lie. NSFAS will be paying allowances to students through its direct payment system on 1 September 2023.

NSFAS acknowledged that they experienced a technical problem that resulted in the non-payment of allowances. However, they are adamant that the technical glitch has been resolved and will proceed with the payment of allowances.

The scheme has a technical glitch resulting in non-payment of allowances … However, this has been fixed and NSFAS will effect payment by midnight on 31 August 2023.

NSFAS has apologised to students for the payment delay and the inconvenience it will cause to students.

We would like to convey our heartfelt apologies for this unfortunate moment and completely understand the inconvenience this delay will cause our beneficiaries. We will always try our best to ensure that this never occurs going forward.

When Will Students Be Able To Use Their September NSFAS Allowance?

Due to allowance payments being processed at midnight on 31 August 2023, students can expect to see their allowance payment reflected in their account on 1 September 2023. Once their NSFAS allowance payment reflects in their NSFAS bank account, students can begin transacting with their allowances.
