The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has opened semester 1 applications.

The government bursary scheme invited students planning to enrol or already enrolled in approved courses at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges to apply for funding.

NSFAS offers comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at TVET colleges. This includes money for tuition and registration fees as well as several allowances for food, accommodation and learning materials.

Students planning to register for Semester 1 courses at TVET colleges can now apply for NSFAS funding. Those intending to begin their studies in the 2025 academic year must submit their applications during the current NSFAS application period.

NSFAS 2025 Application Deadlines

NSFAS bursary applications for 2025 are open, and thousands of students have already applied. Prospective beneficiaries must submit their applications online by 15 December 2024.

Unlike previous years, NSFAS has confirmed that TVET walk-in applications will not be available in 2025. Grade 12 learners are reminded that matric results are not required when applying for NSFAS funding.

Who Qualifies for NSFAS?

NSFAS funding is available to all South African citizens and permanent residents who meet the following criteria:

  • A combined household income of no more than R350,000 per annum before deductions.
  • Individuals living with disabilities can have a household income of up to R600,000 to qualify for a bursary.
  • Students with a combined household income between R350,000 and R600,000 may qualify for an NSFAS loan.

Additional TVET College Application Periods

NSFAS TVET College application periods align with the academic calendar to allow students to apply for funding based on their intended registration cycle. It is important to apply for the funding cycle that matches the academic term in which you plan to enrol.

The key NSFAS application periods for 2025 are as follows:

  • Trimester 2: Opens 12 May 2025 and closes 23 May 2025.
