The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) will soon be closing the late admissions application period for the 2024 school year. Parents and guardians in the province now have the opportunity to apply for placement for their children at a school in the province.

More than 300,000 admission applications were received by the GDE for the 2024 school year. The department says this represents 99.8% of the learners whose parents submitted admission applications during the official 2024 admission application period for Grade 1 and Grade 8 placement in the province.

However, not all learners who will be admitted to schools in the province have been placed. The late application period allows parents to secure their child's placement in Grade 1 or Grade 8 at a school in the province for the 2024 school year.

Parents will have until the end of January 2024 to submit a late admission application for Gauteng schools. However, they are encouraged to submit applications as soon as possible as space is limited and automatic placement of learners will leave them with fewer options over the course of the next month.

Late Applications to Grade 1 and Grade 8 for the 2024 academic year are opening on 18 December 2023 and closing on 31 January 2024.

The late application period allows parents and guardians to apply for their child's placement at a Gauteng school after failing to submit an admission application to the official application period.

During the late application period, parents will only be able to apply at schools that still have space. In addition to this, parents will only be allowed to apply to one school. This is in contrast to the official GDE admissions application period where parents were allowed to apply for admission on behalf of their children at five schools.

Only schools with space will be available for applications. Parents must apply to only one school and will be automatically placed at said school.

Submitting A Gauteng Online Admissions Application

Gauteng school admissions applications must be completed online on the GDE admissions website. Parents will be required to complete the five-step application process

To submit your application, you will be required to click on REGISTER and complete the 5-step application process.

The process of submitting a Gauteng application includes providing parent/guardian details, address details and providing learner information. Applicants will then be required to apply to the school of their choice.

While the fifth step of the application process usually requires parents to upload supporting documents online, this is not required during the late application period. The GDE said parents may submit documents at the school their child was placed at when schools reopen in January 2024.

Documents may be submitted to the school when schools reopen in January 2024.

Parents who require assistance are encouraged to contact the GDE on 0800 000 789.

GDE MEC Matome Chiloane is confident that when schools open on 17 January 2024 all learners who are not yet placed will be in school.

We would want we would want 100% but we will have 100% what we can see about this process now is that by the 17th of January when schools open all this 0.2% will be placed so we're anticipating a greater, much more enthusiastic Academic Year.
