The South African Social Security Agency, commonly known as SASSA, provides financial relief to poor and vulnerable South Africans.
At the end of the year 2020, SASSA had suspended its Temporary Disability Grant which provides financial assistance to more than 200 000 South African citizens who are unable to work, due to injury or illness, for between 6 and 12 months.
Due to restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, many people were not able to visit doctors to receive their medical assessments to renew their grants. SASSA granted a ten-month extension before medical reviews would be needed again and that extension ended on 31 December 2020.
SASSA has asked the beneficiaries of this grant to re-apply for the year 2021, this requires them to get a medical review from a doctor/clinician which states that they are temporarily unable to work due to a medical condition.
How To Re-Apply
- Go to: https://www.sassa.gov.za/Supplier-Registration-Forms/Documents/Medical%20Assessment%20Referral%20Form.pdf to download and print the medical referral form.
- Visit your treating doctor to receive a medical assessment and so that they may fill out the referral form.
- Then visit the nearest SASSA Office with the following to re-apply:
- ID document/ ID document of the person you have sent to re-apply for you if you are unable to.
- Referral letter from treating doctor
- Medical records
Queues at SASSA offices are often very long so beneficiaries are asked to observe all Covid-19 safety protocols such as maintaining social distancing, wearing a mask over the mouth and nose and washing and sanitizing their hands regularly.
