Millions of vulnerable individuals in South Africa rely on support from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa). To apply for grants in March 2025, applicants must submit their applications and check their status for approval.

Sassa offers several different grants based on the needs of beneficiaries. These permanent grants include the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.

Applying for a Permanent Grant

To apply in March 2025, visit the nearest Sassa office or authorize someone to apply on your behalf if you're unable to travel due to illness or age. Certain grants, such as the Older Person’s, Child Support, and Foster Child grants, can also be applied for online via the Sassa services website.

After submission, you will receive a reference number, which serves as proof of application. There is no application fee.

Checking Your Grant Status

After submitting your application in March 2025, track its status online using your reference number

The application date is considered the day all necessary documents are submitted and Sassa's requirements are met.

If applying at an office, processing can take up to three months. If approved, payments begin from the date of application.

If Your Application Is Rejected

Sassa will inform you in writing of any rejection, detailing the reasons and your appeal options. Appeals can be made to the Minister of Social Development within 90 days of receiving the rejection notice.

Payment and Suspension

Payments for March 2025 can be made via direct deposit or through Sassa-appointed service providers. Notify Sassa of any changes in your circumstances, such as address, marital status, or financial situation, to avoid suspension. Other reasons for suspension include changes in medical or financial status, non-compliance with reviews, fraud, errors, or missing documentation.

Grant payments are typically made in the first week of March 2025, starting from the second working day, excluding weekends and public holidays.
