The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) recently confirmed the grant payment dates for June 2024 for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant. While this informs beneficiaries when they will be paid, it does not tell them how much.

When the SRD grant was first implemented in 2020, the monetary value of the grant was R350. However, that was four years ago and now the value of the grant was finally increased in April 2024.

How Much June SRD Grant Payments Will be

The increase of the SRD Grant announcement by the minister in April 2024 was R20. This brought the total value of the SRD grant to R370.

Therefore, the June 2024 SRD grant payment will be R370. Only successful SRD Grant applicants will receive grant payments in June 2024.

How Sassa Decides If You Get An SRD Grant Payment

The application process for the SRD grant involves several steps to verify your eligibility. First, you'll need to provide your details, including your ID number, name, and surname. This information is then sent to the Department of Home Affairs for validation.

In the next step, your ID number is checked against various databases. These include the South African Revenue Services (SARS), Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), and National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to assess your financial situation.

After that, both your ID number and mobile number are subjected to a fraud risk scoring process to ensure the legitimacy of your application.

Finally, once all these checks are complete, Sassa will evaluate your application and determine whether you are approved or denied for the SRD grant.

Future Of The SRD Grant

The SRD Grant is paid to approximately nine million people living in South Africa every month. It's important to note that this is the only grant directly intended to assist unemployed adults living in the country.

The government allocated R33.6 billion for implementation of the grant until March 2025. However, provisional allocations indicate that extensions may be possible through March 2027.

This indicates a potential long-term commitment to the programme, but final decisions on funding beyond 2025/26 will be determined in future budgets.
