The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has placed the majority of learners who applied for admission to schools in the province for the 2025 academic year.
During the Gauteng Online Admissions application period, the online admissions system recorded a total of 344,890 applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8.
Of the 325,858 complete applications, 99.97% (325,734 learners) were successfully placed in schools.
Learners with incomplete applications were allowed to select from schools with available space from 11 December 2024
GDE spokesperson, Steve Mabona, stated that the department is currently assisting with placements for late applicants and "inner-grade" applicants.
Inner-grade applicants, such as those relocating to Gauteng from other provinces or transferring within the province, will be accommodated after the 10-day headcount process.
Mabona adds that schools that have space will be offered to late Grade 1 and Grade 8 applicants.
Late applicants for Grade 1 and Grade 8 are being assisted immediately and placed in schools with available space.
Parents are urged to accept placement offers as soon as possible.
The department is assisting parents who wish to decline their initial school allocation and explore alternative options.
As of 20 January 2025, the GDE has placed 16,255 late applicants for Grade 1 and 14,243 for Grade 8.
We are pleased to report that our efforts to address all queries and finalise placements are progressing efficiently.
"We are seeing a significant reduction in wait times at our offices as we continue to assist parents and guardians,” concluded Mabona.
