The Eastern Cape MEC, Fundile Gade says he was alerted by the Department of Corporate Services that some parts of the province had been negatively affected by flooding.
The department is on top of the crisis and assessing which schools and communities have been affected.
Areas affected by the flooding include Motherwell, New Brighton and KwaZakhele in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro and Gade said that it has lead to a disastrous environment.
The metro said that a number of roads have been damaged and thousands of people have been displaced.
Disaster Management Teams that were sent to assess the damage were also tasked with determining the extent to which schools have been affected and whether the provincial government would need to put in place relief programmes to assist households which have been affected, so that learners are not vulnerable.
Gade says that the province doesn't usually experience high rainfall during winter, so the department needs to find an alternative way to plan and adjust to the climate changes.
He says that the budget allocations must also take into consideration the unintended consequences of climate change.
