The Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) is now accepting applications for the 2026 school year. If your child will be starting school in 2026, here's what you need to know.

Eastern Cape school applications will be open from 8 April 2025 to 8 June 2025.

Parents are strongly encouraged to apply early to secure placement for their children in schools within the province.

Admission Age Requirements

  • Grade R: Children must be four years old, turning five by 30 June 2025.
  • Grade 1: Children must be five years old, turning six by 30 June 2025.

While these are the official age requirements, the ECDoE acknowledges that parents may choose to enroll their children in Grade R (age 5) or Grade 1 (age 6) at a slightly older age.

The ECDoE emphasises the importance of Early Childhood Education. It helps children develop essential learning skills through play and interaction, preparing them for formal schooling. The ECDoE strongly recommends that children attend Grade R.

Required Application Documents (may vary by school)

  • Proof of residence (utility bill, lease agreement)
  • Immunization card (Grade R applicants only)
  • Last official school report card (if applicable)
  • Learner's ID, birth certificate, or passport
  • Study permit or proof of application (for foreign learners)
  • A police affidavit may be required in some cases.

You are not limited to applying to schools in your immediate area. You can apply to any public school within the Eastern Cape. It is advisable to contact your preferred schools directly to inquire about their specific application processes and available spaces.

Schools typically have designated "feeder zones" to manage student enrollment. Students residing within a school's feeder zone are given priority for admission.

If you live outside a feeder zone, you can still apply to your preferred school, but placement is not guaranteed.
