The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) has issued a warning to all prospective students regarding a fraudulent circular on social media which contains false information about the 2025 admissions process. This fake circular aims to mislead applicants and potentially exploit unsuspecting prospective students financially.
Most of South Africa's universities are currently accepting 2025 admission applications. Thousands of students are expected to apply for admission to further their education in 2025.
However, fraudsters are aware of this and are looking to capitalise on unsuspecting students.
Identifying the Fake Circular
The fraudulent circular, dated 9 July 2024, contains several inaccuracies and suspicious details. It lists a WhatsApp number and an email address for inquiries.
The university says they do not have a WhatsApp number which should serve as an indication that the circular is not from the institution.
The image in this post is circulating across social media, this is a SCAM. We do not have a WhatsApp number.
The circular also states that an NSC with 17+ AP and level 3 is required for any course. This is misleading, as admission requirements at CPUT differ depending on the programme and are detailed in the official prospectus.
One of the most concerning aspects is the demand for an amount of R700 after acceptance which purportedly guarantees students successful admission.
CPUT clarifies that it does not request any payment in exchange for guaranteed admission. Official fees are outlined on the university’s website and are only paid through recognised channels.
