The Western Cape Government has officially launched a Computerised Learner’s Licence Testing (CLLT) system. The provincial government believes the system’s launch will result in safer roads, improved economic opportunities, and reduced corruption.
A live demonstration of a state-of-the-art digital testing system was on show at the Beaufort West Driving Licence Testing Centre. The system, which replaces the traditional manual booklet method, is set to be rolled out across the province in the coming months.
Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku believes the launch of the system could meaningfully contribute to economic growth in the province. This as a drivers licence is a prerequisite for many jobs.
The MEC says the new system will make it easier for people to get their licences.
This digital shift is a big step toward safer roads and a stronger economy. By improving driver skills through fair and efficient testing, we’re also boosting employability, supporting the Western Cape’s Growth for Jobs Strategy,
Benefits of the Computerised Learner’s Licence System
The system offers several benefits, including standardised testing to curb corruption, instant digital results, support for hearing-impaired applicants, and improved data accuracy through fingerprint-secured terminals linked to the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS).
Sileku adds that the system contributed to value-driven transformation.
This is not just a technological upgrade – it’s a values-driven transformation. The system ensures that every applicant, regardless of ability, is treated with fairness and dignity.
The new CLLT system has been installed in all provincial testing centres outside the metro, and plans to implement it in Cape Town are underway. Each testing centre features networked workstations, touchscreen kiosks, and backup power to ensure reliability.
Residents can book learner’s licence tests at their local centres and access free study materials online at www.natis.gov.za. The provincial government emphasises this as a values-driven move towards fairness, accessibility, and safer roads.
