The application criteria are designed to ensure that only eligible and genuinely unemployed youth are considered for these opportunities. The requirements focus on age, location, education, and employment status. Applications for teaching assistant and general education assistant roles are facilitated through the SAYouth.mobi website.

Applications opened on Tuesday, 22 May 2025, and by 6 PM, more than 1.1 million applications had been submitted via the SAYouth.mobi platform. This occurred despite the website experiencing crashes due to high traffic caused by the volume of applications.

SAYouth has also clarified whether recipients of the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant are eligible to apply for these positions.

Can SRD Grant Beneficiaries Apply for Teaching Assistant Jobs?

Introduced in 2020, the SRD grant provides financial assistance to unemployed adults in South Africa. However, not all unemployed individuals automatically qualify for the grant.

To be eligible for the SRD grant, applicants must be aged between 18 and 59, unemployed, have a bank balance not exceeding R629, and must not be receiving other forms of government support such as the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) or the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

SRD grant beneficiaries are allowed to apply for teaching assistant positions. However, if they are offered employment, they must cancel their SRD grant within one month of starting work.

If they are hired, they will be required to terminate their SRD Grant within one month of working.

Successful teaching assistant applicants will receive a monthly stipend of R4,000 for six months, along with a R30 data allowance.
