About 10,1 million learners walk from their homes to their education institution, this is according to a survey released by Statistics South Africa (StatsSa) in collaboration with the Department of Transport.

The government agency, StatsSa, has also shared that this indicated a decrease from the 11 million observed in 2013 which represented 63,4% of all learners.

Recently, Transport Deputy Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga has paid a visit to Upington in Northern Cape, to fast track the department’s campaigns as October is Transport Month, this includes the Shova Kalula Bicycle programme and the Operation Vala Zonke Pothole campaign.

According to reports, Chikunga has encouraged learners at the Saul Damon Secondary School in Upington to safeguard the bicycle fleet as it has been handed over to the beneficiaries.

The department has confirmed that approximately a fleet of 100 000 bicycles has been delivered to the school learners that have to travel by foot, walking at least a distance of 3 km between school and their homes on a daily basis.

StatsSa has also pointed out that the time from home to school is an important factor to consider when determining the ease or difficulty one would experience when travelling to these institutions.

This is a very important factor to consider for learners as it is their Constitutional right to have access to basic education and further education.
