The Gauteng Department of Health had revealed that more than 23,000 girls aged under 18 gave birth between April 2020 and March 2021 – of which 934 were aged under 14 - compared to 14,577 girls aged 19 and under having babies in the same period a year earlier.

Early pregnancy amongst learners has negative implications such as not finishing their school career, which ultimately translates in increased dropout rates in the department.

Recently, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) held a workshop with other stakeholders in the Education Sector, to tackle the issue of early pregnancy amongst learners.

This workshop was led by the department’s Health Promotion officials who were conducting this workshop on the Learner Pregnancy Prevention and Management Policy in Mbombela, Mpumalanga.

According to the DBE, this strengthens the multi-sectoral led response to early and unintended pregnancies amongst learners.

It is said that the Pregnancy Policy also advocates with the Protocol for the Reporting and Management of Sexual Harassment in schools to emphasise the importance of reporting sexual abuse.
