The National Benchmark Test (NBT) is an examination which is set up by the National Benchmark Test Project. It is a set of tests which are used to assess a learner's academic literacy, general knowledge, and mathematical skill in order to measure academic readiness for university.

The NBT consists of two tests: Core Maths (MAT) and the Academic Quantitative Literacy (AQL), which are both multiple-choice tests with three hours writing time. These tests are written on the same day and can be written in English or Afrikaans depending on what the learner indicated when registering.

After you have written your NBT, your results will reflect on the NBT website. To view these results you just need to log in to the NBT website using your ID number as your username and your password that you created during the registration process.

You can also access your results by sending an email to [email protected] requesting your results. You can request your results four weeks after your test session.

So what do your NBT results mean?

The three performance levels or benchmark categories that your NBT score can be placed in are:

  • 'Proficient',
  • 'Intermediate', or
  • 'Basic'.

If your score is placed in the "Proficient" category then it means that you will be able to cope with the demands of tertiary study programmes without needing extra academic support.

If your score is placed in the "Intermediate" category then it means that it is suspected that you will face challenges in your academic performance in university and would need some academic support.

If your score is placed in the "Basic" category then it means that you are seen to be unprepared for university studies.
