A college diploma is generally the minimum education required for a career as a technician. However, a degree can expose individuals to the most current technologies and improve chances of employment upon completion.

What is a technician?

A technician is one who specializes in or works in a given field. This speciality is commonly related to a profession, and most automotive companies have a standard list of jobs for technicians, such as calibrations, diagnostics and repairs. Many technicians hold a technical degree (in lieu of a technical certificate) that certifies the individual as a certified technician.

Steps to become a technician

Step 1: Make A Resume - Create a resume listing your experience and education. Add experience as many jobs as possible. Weigh this against your total number of positions and your educational training (preferred) on your resume to determine which jobs are the most relevant and in demand.

Step 2: Outline Your Requirements - The key to adding the appropriate details to a resume is to clearly state what employers want. Take time to outline the job duties required, the policies and procedures and any important time-management skills, such as attendance record and attendance at meetings, etc.

The need for skills

While an education alone may not be enough to qualify for a career as a technician, most of today's equipment is high-tech, advanced equipment with millions of parts that require highly skilled technicians to maintain. In addition to the high level of technical knowledge required to work in this field, the work requires exceptional communication and problem solving skills, which typically are developed through experience and also in the classroom.

Education requirements to become a technician

Certification for specialty positions requires continued education, usually at a local university or technical college. Training for any job will be unique to the specific program. So, a degree can help, but if you do not take your education seriously, your career will suffer.

You need to understand what the job entails and how you can best contribute to the overall project. Your training should prepare you to be an asset to your company, one of the many technicians who work on its machines.

Steps to success

  • Apply for certification/accreditation programs
  • Find a job in your area of expertise
  • Complete required training for certification or accreditation
  • Stay competitive in the market

Safety, integrity, reliability and professionalism are requirements for the road. Regardless of which pathway you choose, you will want to plan ahead to ensure you are qualified to take on these responsibilities in a skilled and committed manner.
