GDE Admissions

GDE stands for the Gauteng Department of Education. The GDE is responsible for school admissions in Gauteng. Panyaza Lesufi forms a part of the GDE as he is the Gauteng MEC for Education.

The Department of Basic Education has released the 2019 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study report and has lead to the Department being concerned when it comes to the pace of improvements in maths and science.


Eastern Cape schools have been lacking infrastructure for years and the lack of funding to improve this has left students in classrooms without roofs and dangerous sanitation facilities. 


The Eastern Cape Education Department has faced some challenges this year but it is still gunning for an 80% pass rate for matric learners in the province. Recently, KwaZulu-Natal also set a pass rate of 80%.

 


This time last year, the Western Cape had 64 465 candidates registered to write the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exam. This year, close to 100 000 candidates have registered to write. 


Time is ticking for the class of 2020, as the final exams draw close. With more than 1 million candidates registered to write, the department has said this is the highest number of candidates it will have to accommodate. 


The countdown is almost over, as learners will start writing their matric exams next week. The Department of Basic Education has spent much time preparing learners and making sure the exams follow Covid-19 protocol. 


The Department has been battling with illegal schools for years, as these schools give learners false hope and fail to register them for exams. The stakes are high this year as learners prepare to write their final exams next week.


Part of Basic Education's budget is being used to bail out South African Airways. The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) is not pleased with the fact that the budget is being used to save State-Owned Enterprises at the expense of schools.
