Should you wear a face mask?

Does wearing a face mask prevent you from contracting the coronavirus?

Answer:

This is a very hotly contested question and there are many differing opinions - even from the experts.

Most people wear face masks because they believe that it will prevent them from contracting the coronavirus. However, this is not the case.

If you are not infected with the virus, it is not recommended for you to wear a face mask because it is not effective in preventing you from contracting the virus. Instead, this causes a shortage of face masks for healthcare workers and infected people.

Face masks essentially prevent infected people from infecting uninfected people. Therefore, face masks are most effective if they are worn by people who have already been infected with the virus.

If you shake hands with an infected person and you use your hands to touch your eyes, nose, or mouth, then you are at risk of contracting coronavirus. If an infected person sneezes in close proximity to you, and you inhale the droplets, then you are also at risk of being infected with the virus.

Always remember that the virus enters the body through the nose, eyes and mouth. This is why it is good to practice good hygiene, by washing your hands frequently and avoiding contact with your face.

The World Health Organisation says you don't have to wear masks if you are not infected. US lead doctor in the fight against the pandemic, Anthony Faucci says he thinks it can't do any harm and he supports it, as long as it doesn't take masks away from medical staff who really need them when they are treating the sick.
