What is coronavirus?

How is coronavirus transmitted?

The cause of the current coronavirus (Covid-19), can be traced to a case of ‘Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2’ (SARS-CoV-2) , which was identified on 7 January 2020. The majority of the initial Covid-19 cases can be traced to vendors at a seafood, poultry and live wildlife market in China. The virus has since spread to more than 100 countries, including South Africa.

The initial transmission of coronavirus was initially from an animal source, however, the virus can now be transmitted through human interactions with infected individuals. The virus is a strain of a respiratory disease, and it is thought to be caused by contact with an infected person who coughs or sneezes. The coughs or sneezes produce respiratory droplets, which can stay in the air for up to 45 minutes.

Travelers who are in contact with infected persons in high-risk areas such as: China, Italy, Iran, Vietnam, and Singapore, are at a great risk of being infected.
