Useful Apps To Enhance Distance Learning For Students
We are living in a very fast-paced and ever-changing technological environment. Today, technology and the internet has impacted many aspects of our lives. Technology is a dynamic tool which has changed the relationship and role between students and their lecturers.
Purdue online University says,“Technology has always been at the forefront of human education. From the days of carving figures on rock walls to today, when most students are equipped with several portable technological devices at any given time, technology continues to push educational capabilities to new levels. In looking at where educational methods and tools have come from to where they are going in the future, technology’s importance in the classroom is evident now more than ever.”
Useful apps to enhance distance learning:
Google classroom - An app designed by Google to provide an online classroom for teachers. This enables students to have all their required material provided by the teacher/ lecturer. This app is completely user-friendly and all documents are stored onto the Google drive. The perks of using Google classroom allows lecturers to make announcements, engage/ interact and load materials for students.
Zoom - This platform is used for various events such as video communication, distance learning, group learning and social interactions. Zoom can be an easy-to-use platform when engaging with students. This provides real time interaction with students and they are able to access Zoom on any device. Zoom provides a sense of being in a “classroom” as there is engagement between lecturers and students whilst being in the comfort of your own space.
Khan Academy - An online platform created by Salman Khan with the purpose of providing online techniques to help students. This platform helps educate students through short videos and online courses which enables them to learn and study at their own pace.
Loom app - This is a video recording app which allows you to record and share videos instantly with others. Loom is considered a much easier way of communicating than texting and is very versatile for students.
Flipgrid - An online platform which allows students/ lecturers to record short video clips. This useful app enables lecturers to facilitate discussions and respond to any questions centred around a particular topic. This allows students to answer with a short video. The responses can be altered to either only the lecturer being able see the answers or made available to everyone.
As technology keeps evolving the way in which we learn, we need to be mindful of advantages and disadvantages of digital learning. With many useful apps to enhance learning, this provides students to share their knowledge, engage, interact and improve their learning opportunities with each other.
