Achieving Success While Being Stressed

Author:

Self-care and self-love are important in keeping mental health issues and stress at bay – especially while balancing a hectic lifestyle as a student. Many people practice self-care/self-love in different ways, but as long as whatever you are doing reduces stress, calms you down or brings up your self-confidence, you’re on the right track. Do what works for you.

When interviewing different students on campus, I’ve found that there are many different tips and techniques on how to combat mental health issues associated with the stressful life of being a student. Some of these tips include listening to your favourite music, eating healthy snacks, exercising or meditating, keeping yourself busy with hobbies you enjoy, napping when needed, taking breaks from studying, simply just “chilling” and staying hydrated.

Some other techniques that are scientifically proven to reduce stress while studying include:

  • Getting into a proper routine every day and sleeping at least 6-8 hours a night.
  • Journaling or writing in a diary/blog about your feelings, your day, and your stresses.
  • Connecting with friends and family.
  • Joining societies or taking up a new hobby that you can use as “me time”.
  • Keeping on top of your assignments and important dates by getting a diary and planning a study schedule.
  • Reading positive quotes or saying daily positive affirmations.
  • Remembering to take a break every now and then, even for a short time between assignments, studying, or lectures.
  • Remember to stay on top of your physical and mental health regardless of how busy your days are and to do what makes you happy – your university marks aren’t worth losing your mind over!

And as RuPaul says: “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?”
