Stellenbosch University has opened applications for the 2026 academic year.

If you are considering applying, follow this step-by-step guide to ensure a smooth application process.

Step 1: Select a Programme

Before applying, explore the programmes offered at Stellenbosch University. Visit www.maties.com to check available courses or browse the University Yearbook.

Step 2: Ensure You Meet the Admission and Selection Criteria

To apply, you must meet the basic academic requirements for a bachelor's degree and the specific selection criteria for your chosen programme. Stellenbosch University receives a high number of applications each year, so meeting the requirements does not guarantee placement.

Minimum Academic Requirements for a Bachelor's Degree:

  • An UMALUSI-certified National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Independent Examinations Board (IEB) qualification.

  • A minimum of 30% in a South African Language of Learning and Teaching (English or Afrikaans).

  • An achievement rating of at least 4 (50–59%) in four 20-credit subjects.

To calculate your NSC average: Add your highest score in English or Afrikaans and the five best results of your 20-credit subjects (excluding Life Orientation and non-UMALUSI accredited subjects). Divide the total by six.

For applicants with international qualifications, Stellenbosch University uses specific conversion guidelines for assessment.

Step 3: Create a Profile on the SU Portal

Visit the Stellenbosch University online application portal and create an account.

Step 4: Fill in the Required Information

Once your profile is set up, complete the online application form with the necessary details.

Step 5: Upload Required Documents

Ensure that you upload all supporting documents, such as academic transcripts and identification documents, as specified in the application guidelines.

Step 6: Submit Your Application

After completing all required sections, submit your application before the closing date. Stellenbosch University will communicate with you throughout the application process and notify you of any updates regarding your application status.

National Benchmark Test (NBT)

The National Benchmark Test (NBT) assesses your language, numerical, and mathematical skills in relation to university coursework. Some programmes, such as those in the Faculty of Law, require applicants to write the NBT by specific deadlines.

For more details and to book a test date, visit www.nbt.ac.za.

Multiple Programme Applications

You may apply for up to three programmes from any faculty. If eligible, you may receive multiple offers, but you must accept one before the deadline in your offer letter.

If two of your selected programmes have competitive selection processes, consider choosing a third programme with a less extensive selection process to improve your chances of admission.

Tracking Your Application

After submission, you can track your application status through the Applicant Portal using your email address or Application ID. Stellenbosch University will also send you email updates regarding your application progress.

Accepting an Offer & Uploading Your Signed Contract

If you receive multiple offers, you can accept only one at a time. If you accept a second or third offer, it will replace the previous one.

Conditional Offers: If you apply with Grade 11 results, admission will be conditional upon meeting the final NSC or equivalent exam requirements.

Final Offers: If you apply with Grade 12 results, you will receive a final offer based on those results. You must accept an offer within three days of receiving it, or it will expire.

After accepting an offer, you must upload a signed Student Contract. International students will receive a letter of undertaking for study visa applications and must complete a pre-registration process, including verifying a valid passport, visa, and medical cover.
