Stellenbosch University Extends Recess

Stellenbosch University has had to make further arrangements after the President's announcement of a 21 day lockdown. Recess has been extended until 20 April.

When Covid-19 hit South Africa and we all saw the numbers grow, higher education institutions were all shut down as well as schools and businesses were making moves to have staff be evacuated from offices. This has called for universities to implement precautionary measures.

Stellenbosch has released a statement stating further measures that are to be taken following the President's lockdown announcement.

The second term was initially set to commence on 30 March online. However, the University has decided to extend the recess until 20 April. This second term might be extended into June to make up for lost time.

No student assessments are predicted for hand-in before May 2020. There is also a possibility of the June exams taking place online.

There is uncertainty surrounding whether contact teaching will be possible by then. The University is therefore prepared if online methods are to be used. Students and staff are to make use of discussion forums via SUNLearn. The University will ensure that relevant platforms and learning materials are available. They will engage with mobile service providers for sero-rated data so that students can access higher education domains.

500 students have remained in SU residences and the University will support these students and provide support services where they can. Strict guidelines that were set out for the lockdown will also be followed on these residences.

The University will be mostly closed. However, due to students remaining in residences, they are making special arrangements for essential services. Access to the Neelsie will be open but controlled.
