As exam season approaches students at Unisa may be interested in familiarizing themselves with the Unisa Invigilator App, which will be used to invigilate their upcoming online exams. Here is how to navigate the Unisa Invigilator App.

The University of South Africa (Unisa) is an open distance e-learning university which means that most of the academic activity takes place online. The university's online examinations are invigilated by an online application. 

Thus, it is important that Unisa students know how to download and make use of the Unisa Invigilator App. 

Before making use of the app students must to do the following: 

  • Check if their module is invigilated by the Invigilator app, by clicking on The Invigilator (invigilatorapp.herokuapp.com). If none of a student’s modules are invigilated, then they will not be able to register on the Invigilator App.
  • Download the Invigilator app three days before their first examination. 

How To Get The Unisa Invigilator App 

  1. Download the app from the app store on your phone. (Make sure that your phone's operating system is updated so that the app can function properly and can be downloaded)
  2. Once you have opened the App, click "Register as a student" 
  3. Fill in the required, using your UNISA email address and creating a password.
  4. Then click "SIGN UP". 
  5. Verify your account by following the steps provided. 
  6. Then you are required to do Calibration on the app, this is so that the invigilator will have access to your microphone and camera when you are writing your online exam. 
  7. You will be asked to take a "Master Selfie" on the app which shows your entire face.
  8. Once you have done this you can Login by using your email address and password that you provided when you signed up. 

Unisa has urged students to register in advance and make use of the student user guide provided by the Invigilator App on how to go through the process of setting up the App and how to perform a demo test in preparation for their online exams.

How To Use The Unisa Invigilator App

For students making use of one device (cellphone): 

  • Open the Invigilator App and scan of the QR codes made available by module lecturers on the module sites one day before the examination and/or examination question paper.
  • The QR code is available for activation 15 minutes before and after the official starting time of the examination.
  • Then click on "access LMS" which can be found on the top right of the app. 
  • Access the myExams web page at https://myexams.unisa.ac.za/portal/
  • Click on the applicable module
  • Then log in and access the question paper
  • Start your assessment
  • Complete the requests, as and when prompted by the Invigilator app.
  • Having completed the invigilation, scan and upload the answer script on the official Unisa myExams at: https://myexams.unisa.ac.za/portal/
  • Students must submit their answer scripts as requested by the Invigilator App AND on myExams platform. Submitting answer scripts on the Invigilator App only will not be accepted as formal submissions. 
  • The invigilation completes as the assessment duration ends.
  • Students have ONE hour after their scheduled session end time of their examination to submit their answer scripts on myExams.

For students making use of two devices (laptop and cellphone): 

  • Access the examination question paper on the myExams home page platform at: https://myexams.unisa.ac.za/portal/
  • Click on the module 
  • Log in and access the question paper by clicking on your module code.
  • Open the Invigilator App and scan of the QR codes made available by module lecturers on the module sites one day before the examination and/or examination question paper.
  • The QR code is available for activation 15 minutes before and after the official starting time of the examination. 
  • Scan the QR code on your cellphone.
  • Start your assessment.
  • Complete the requests, as and when prompted by the Invigilator app.
  • Having completed the invigilation, scan and upload the answer script on the official Unisa myExams at: https://myexams.unisa.ac.za/portal/
  • Students must submit their answer scripts as requested by the Invigilator App AND on myExams platform. Submitting answer scripts on the Invigilator App only will not be accepted as formal submissions. 
    • Students have ONE hour after their scheduled session end time of their examination to submit their answer scripts on myExams.

Unisa has stated that if a student does not make use of the invigilation tools, it will be regarded as a transgression of the examination rules and they will face disciplinary processes.
