Most universities across South Africa ask student to pay an application fee in order to apply at their institution. We have the application fee information to all 26 universities in South Africa right here, one click away.

When applying at a university, you will find that in most cases the institution requests that you pay an application fee, to secure your application.

This could range from being free to being R300, depending on the university. International students however, in most cases have a higher application fee than South African citizens.

University of South Africa (Unisa)

Unisa is an online university that can be accessed across South Africa.

They offer qualifications in faculties like  Accounting Sciences, Agriculture & Environmental Sciences, Economic & Management Sciences, Education, Human Sciences, Law, Science, Engineering & Technology, Graduate Studies and Graduate School of Business Leadership. 

The application fee at Unisa is R105 for online application and R200 for manual application.

Tshwane University of Technology 

Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is a university in South Africa where the three technikons decided to merge into one. The technikons were, Technikon Northern Gauteng, Technikon North-West and Technikon Pretoria.

They offer qualifications in the following faculties: Arts and Design, Economics and Finance, Engineering and the Built Environment, Humanities, Information and Communication Technology, Management Sciences and Science.

University of Pretoria 

University of Pretoria (UP) is located in Gauteng and offers qualifications in Economic and Management Sciences, Education, Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Theology and Religion and Veterinary Science. 

UP's application is R300 but, if your household income is below R150 000 per year, its free

University of Witwatersrand 

University of Witwatersrand (Wits), is located in Johannesburg, Gauteng. They offer; Commerce, Law and Management, Engineering and the Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities and Science.

Wits application fees is R100 for South African Citizen but, R700 for foreign citizens.

University of Johannesburg (UJ)

Located in Gauteng, they have the following faculties:

  • College of Business and Economics
  • Faculty of Health Sciences
  • Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture
  • Faculty of Humanities
  • Faculty of Education

  • Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment
  • Faculty of Science

UJ's application fees is free if you apply online and R200 if you apply manually

Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) is located in Pretoria, Gauteng. 

They offer Medicine, Health Care Sciences, Oral Health Sciences, Pharmacy and Science and Technology

Vaal University of Technology (VUT), in Gauteng, offers:

VUT's application fees is R100 but, late applications pay R140.

Durban University of Technology

The Durban University of Technology (DUT), they are located in KZN and have multiple campuses.

They are: 

  • Steve Biko Campus
  • ML Sultan Campus
  • City Campus (Durban)
  • Indumiso Campus
  • Riverside Campus (Pietermaritzburg)

Their six faculties are, Faculty of Accounting and Informatics, Faculty of Arts and Design, Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, Faculty of Health Sciences and Faculty of Management Sciences.

DUT's application is a Central Applications Office cost.  What is the cost of the CAO application fee? R250 for South Africans citizens and R300 for international applicants (you pay R250 and your application is sent to all registered higher education  institutions in KZN).

University of KwaZulu-Natal 

The University of KwaZulu-Natal is located in the province and they have three colleges rather than one campus. The colleges are divided in to faculties. 

They are:

Located in KZN, Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) has three faculties:

The University of Zululand is located in KZN.

University of Mpumalanga is the only university in the Mpumalanga province. 

They offer qualifications in, Agriculture and Natural Science, Engineering, Commerce and Management Science, Health Science, Humanities and Social Studies and Educations.

UMP's application fees is:

  • South African citizens: R150
  • SADC: R150
  • Other African countries: R350
  • Countries outside Africa: R500

University of Free State

University of Free State (UFS) is one of the two universities located in the Free State. 

Their faculties are, Economic and Management Sciences, Education Health Sciences, The Humanities, Law, Natural and Agricultural Sciences and Theology and Religion.

UFS' application fees is free.
