What are the requirements to study law in South Africa?

A career in law is a diverse one and can lead to a specialisation in various areas such as mercantile law, criminal law and private law. As a student of the legal practice, you will be required to apply the principles and procedures as determined by legislation.

Law graduates have the potential to become attorneys, judges, maintenance officers, paralegals and court specialists.

Requirements for law

Possible work environments in the law industry include Courts, Legal firms, Magistrates’ offices, Government institutions and Public or private companies as a legal adviser. You could also be self-employed and work as an attorney or an advocate.

The faculty of law is very popular and well-known, with most of the universities in South Africa offering law degrees.

What subjects are need to become a lawyer?

The requirements to study law differ and are dependent on the University of interest. You should view the website of the university of private college where you think you would like to study to view their requirements.

The average university lawyer requirements are:

  • 70% English Home Language or English First Additional Language
  • 50% for Mathematics (pure math or math literacy)
  • Many universities will require a 65% average over all subjects

For most universities, a minimum Admissions Point Score (APS) of 21 points is needed for admission, but you'll find that certain universities require a minimum of 33 points to study law.
