How To Stay Focused And Motivated When Studying During A Pandemic

Since the global pandemic of the coronavirus, this has had a negative impact on many people's lives. This too had a huge effect on the educational system and many students' daily schedules were disrupted. Many students had to adapt to the new norms and regulations that were implemented by the government. As we all know, the academic schedules and deadline dates for tests, exams and assignments are set in advance. The uncertainty of whether students are going to complete their academic year has left many feeling overwhelmed with emotions.

Although the virus has affected students negatively, they’ll have to find helpful coping measures to remain focussed and productive. There are various ways in which students can adapt and remain productive whilst utilizing their time effectively.

Tips:

  • Create a working space for yourself - We often feel so relaxed and comfortable in our room / bed which can often lead to a decrease in productivity. If you plan on being productive, try to create an inspiring and motivating space for yourself.
  • Create a schedule -  During this time of uncertainty, try and create a detailed schedule and stick to it. Having a set routine allows you to be consistent and have a sense of control over your day.
  • Be flexible and proactive - This step ties in well with the previously mentioned above. Having complete control over your time, you can determine how your day will be structured. Try and utilize your time effectively and be ahead of what you have set out for yourself, for example; if you have completed your tasks for the day, you may want to read the next chapter of a particular topic, make detailed notes or do revision. The choice is yours.
  • Stay connected - It would be helpful to keep in contact and check-in with your classmates. When you have completed online lectures, you can find creative ways to revise your work through short videos, Zoom, Whatsapp chat groups and many other techniques. This is also a way of keeping each other motivated and keeping abreast and not falling behind with the curriculum.
  • Be rewarding - We tend to be hard on ourselves as we always strive for perfection. We often tend to neglect one of the most important love languages of rewarding ourselves. If you know that you have reached your goal for the day, reward yourself for all your hard work and efforts.

It's so easy to be distracted and feel discouraged when we lack motivation. The ultimate goal to staying motivated is to organise your time, prioritize your work and to use your mind effectively.

Here are some helpful ways to stay encouraged and motivated:

  1. Set small daily goals with milestones
  2. Have positive pep talks with yourself
  3. Breathe and take one day at a time
  4. Give yourself credit for trying
  5. Be consistent
  6. Find creative ways to break down your work material (mind-mapping/ vision board)
  7. Stimulate and exercise your brain
  8. Focus on the process and not the outcome or end result
