Department of Higher Education Calls Suspension News Fake

fake

A letter has been released claiming that the whole year will be suspended and people will all have to start the year again next year. However, the Department of Higher Education and Training has clarified that this letter is fake news.

On 26 March, a letter was released claiming that all learning institutions will be cancelling their 2020 academic year as a whole and that it would start again next year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This fake letter claims to be signed off by Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande and reads, "I take this opportunity to inform that all the learning institutions of South Africa are all being suspended for the whole year until next year January due to the Covid-19 virus"

The Department of Higher Education and Training took to their Facebook page to say that this is fake news by uploading the picture and captioning it, "Beware of fake news" pointing down towards this fake letter.

The 2020 academic year is not being cancelled. Institutions are hoping to reopen their doors in April and will also make use of online teaching and learning methods.

It is important that we inform ourselves by getting information from reliable sources. Fake news could have many negative effects on individuals and can even cause panic in a difficult time, especially now when the country as well as the rest of the world is overcome with concern.

Fake news can create confusion and misunderstanding about important issues. It is a criminal offense in South Africa to post fake news concerning the coronavirus.
