Augmented learning keeps students engaged

Education is evolving and technology is the main catalyst behind this transformation. Like many other sectors 'customization' seems to be the central theme and objective of these changes.

"Technology allows us to give a more personalised experience in the classroom, " explains Yolandie Venter ,a strategic marketer at the Academic Institute of Excellence.

This kind of experience can be achieved through augmented learning.

What is Augmented Learning?

[pullquote]Augmented learning refers to tools and techniques that are used to make learning more relevant and suitable to learner needs.[/pullquote] These tools don't replace learning but aim to supplement traditional methods.

Through innovative technologies that stimulate and engage learners, material can be enhanced and concepts can be reinforced.

Voice Activated Elearning

The move from text to voice activated learning is a prime example of augmented learning.

"Students will be able to give answers with their voices," says Venter. This breakthrough innovation will assist students with disabilities, such as dyslexia or visual impairment.

According to the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity 20% of the population is dyslexic. The introduction of AI in class will help to level the playing field for all students.

Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality (VR) is another exciting trend in the education sector and many other industries.

The purpose of virtual reality in education is to enable students to interact with learning material through real-life simulations.

According to American educator, Edgard Dale "the human brain tends to remember 10% of what it reads, 20% of what it hears but 90% of what it does or simulates".

Another benefit of VR is its appeal to young people. "VR keeps students engaged and interested," says Venter.

"It enhances their ability to understand and memorise their subject because they are interactively taking part in the class and classes are vivid."

VR was born in the entertainment industry but has moved from aviation to military to personal use in just a couple of months.

The speed at which technology is transforming the employment sector emphasises the importance of using new technologies in education.

Students who are familiar with virtual reality-related games and apps will be better able to adapt to the workplaces of the future.

"We believe that students need to be equipped to work in fields that might not have been introduced to the market yet," says Venter.

The VR lab introduced by the Academic Institute of Excellence aims to explore the use of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality in the visualizing and presentation of design data.

"The VR lab is not only a facility. It is also an innovative lab which provides students and researchers with an environment to explore , investigate and research the capabilities of the virtual."
