Duties For The Trainee Yard Officials

The purpose of the Trainee Yard Official Programme is to provide structured training - both theoretical and practical - designed to equip trainees with the skills and certification needed to become a qualified Yard Official. The successful candidate will receive comprehensive on-the-job training aligned with Transnet’s operational standards.

What You’ll Be Expected To Do

As a Trainee Yard Official, your responsibilities will include:

•     Successfully completing a structured theoretical training programme within the prescribed time.
•     Participating in and passing a practical training programme to gain hands-on experience.
•     Learning to safely and effectively perform duties assigned during the training period.
•     Developing the skills required to operate rail yard equipment and conduct operations independently.
•     Maintaining a portfolio of evidence documenting all your training progress and experience.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria:

•     Matric/Grade 12 is the minimum educational requirement.
•     Pass a psychological screening (battery test).
•     Pass a medical fitness test, including vision and hearing checks.
•     Demonstrate basic computer literacy.
•     Be physically fit and able to work in demanding environments.
•     Complete and pass both theoretical and practical training components of the programme.

•     Shunting procedures and yard operations
•     Train service operations and safety protocols
•     Geography of assigned rail sections
•     Act 85 and other railway regulations
•     Handling of hazardous materials

•     Conflict management and interpersonal effectiveness
•     Data capturing and report writing
