Call to fix Colleges

Xhosa King Mpendulo Zwelonke Sigcawu has called on the national government to help address conditions at the King Hintsa Further Education and Training (FET) College.

The college has campuses in Dutywa, Butterworth, Centane and Willowvale. The college was named after King Hintsa Zanzolo kaKhawuta, who was a great-grandfather of Sigcawu.

Sigcawu raised a concern that the campuses lacked hostel accommodation. He appealed to President Jacob Zuma, who was in Dutywa last week, for the opening of the Nelson Mandela Legacy Bridge.

This democratic government recognises the role of traditional leaders in society and I am grateful for that, said Sigcawu.

We as a royal family welcomed the naming of the college after our great-grandfather. However, we are not happy with the conditions of the college.

We are making a call to our national government that in spite of all the challenges the King Hintsa faces, please make sure that students have accommodation because their current conditions are not good.

King Hintsa fought for the liberation of this country. Students are piled up in this college because they want education to liberate themselves.

There is no security for these students (at Centane campus). I am following this matter closely; it will not vanish into thin air.

Newly elected PAC national chairperson Bishop Waters Toboti, praised Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande for offering financial assistance to students from struggling families.

But these FET colleges leave much to be desired, said Toboti.
