Department of Defence

The Department of Defence is the government department that is responsible for the military in South Africa.  This includes the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Military Health Service. The main way that young people can join the military is from the Military Skills Development System which is open once a year in each of the arms of the military.


Do you have your ABET or Grade 12/Matric certificate with relevant  computer skills? The Department of Defence is looking for suitable candidates in various departments.


The SA Military Health Service Training Programme for 2022 is open for applications now. 


The South African Air Force has opened applications for the Military Skills Development System for their 2022 programme. There is a General programme as a well as an intake for people who want to train and Pilots and Navigators.


The SA Army is offering young South African citizens an opportunity to serve in uniform on a two-year contract. The Military Skills Development System is a two-year voluntary service system with the long term goal of rejuvenating and enhancing the SA National Defence Force's deployment capability.


The Military Skills Development System is the main training programme for young people who want to join the SA military. The two year programme is an excellent opportunity to serve in uniform over a period of two years. It includes full training and support in the chosen occupation in one of the arms of the military.  The SA Navy are recruiting for submariners and divers - then in a separate programme are recruiting Combat, Engineering, Technical and Support staff.
