University of Cape Town (UCT), Stellenbosch University (SU) and University of the Western Cape (UWC) offer a variety of courses in the natural and environmental sciences, and conservation biology.

Graduates with a BSc, BSc Hons, MSc or PhD can find work in conservation agencies and can take jobs as either terrestrial or freshwater aquatic conservation scientists (botanists, entomologists, ichthyologists, herpetologists, ornithologists, or mammalogists) conservation biologists, regional ecologists, landscape ecologists, conservation technicians, GIS scientists or GIS technicians.

Career progression depends on each agency, but typically a scientist can grow to a senior professional, scientific manager, senior manager and eventually if he/she stays long enough become the Director for Biodiversity.



  • National Diploma in Nature Conservation / equivalent qualification at NQF 6 in a Nature Conservation field.
  • Strong ability to lead with at least 3 years’ management experience in the Conservation Sector
  • Experience in Fynbos Fire Management & Alien Vegetation Management
  • Demonstrable Project Management experience
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to drive on 4×4 terrain
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, after hours and perform stand by duties
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation
  • Thorough working knowledge of MS Office and QGIS (or equivalent) advantageous
  • Physical fitness to perform duties under physically demanding conditions
  • Good written, verbal, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Bilingualism in two of the three official languages of the Western Cape




  • Grade 12
  • National Certificate: Conservation Resource Guardianship (NQF Level 2)
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience as Field Ranger
  • Valid Crew Leader qualification
  • Valid Code 8 license
  • Effective interpersonal skills and well developed report writing skills
  • Proven computer literacy
  • Proven basic GIS proficiency
  • A valid Peace Officer certificate
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team
  • Proven ability to supervise, train, mentor and influence staff behavior positively
  • Bilingualism (ability speak & write at least two of the official languages of the Western Cape)




  • Grade 12 (Matric) Qualification with experience in Administration or Data Capturing
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office (E-mail, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Good administrative, financial and communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing and presentation skills
  • Ability to converse in two of the Western Cape official languages
  • Ability to liaise with all levels of the organization
  • Ability to work both alone and as part of a team
  • Must have a valid driver’s licence
  • Ability and willingness to travel
  • Competency and proven record in data capturing




  • LL.B with a minimum of three years’ post qualification experience
  • Knowledge of all relevant conservation and environment legislation
  • Ability to interpret legislation
  • Attention to detail, deadline driven and able to work under pressure
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and knowledge of another language would be advantageous
  • Excellent people skills and support service focused
  • Analytical and problem solving ability
  • A valid code 8 driver’s license




  • Grade 12 and at least one year job related experience
  • Obtain an appropriate field ranger qualification within 24 months after appointment
  • A valid driver’s licence and ability to drive on 4×4 terrain
  • Physical ability to perform strenuous field duties
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to operate well in a team
  • No criminal record
  • Willingness to work irregular hours and sleep out when required
  • Experience and knowledge in quality control of alien vegetation clearing and other tasks
  • Bilingualism in two of the three official languages of the Western Cape
  • Computer literacy with Ms Office package (Ms Word, Excel, and Outlook etc.)




  • A tertiary qualification in Office administration / Bachelor’s Degree would be advantageous
  • Minimum of 3 years’ administrative experience.
  • Excellent writing and verbal skills in English and with at least one other Western Cape language.
  • Financial Management experience.
  • High level of efficiency and attention to detail
  • Good transcribing and report writing skills
  • Technologically proficient (MS Office, MS Outlook, Video Conference, Teleconference, etc.) with advanced capabilities in Excel
  • Ability to work in a team and willingness to travel across the Western Cape
  • Professionalism in personal interactions (both externally and internally)
  • Problem solving ability
  • Results orientated (ability to manage and meet conflicting deadlines)
  • Familiar with strict handling of confidential protocols and requirements
  • Able to use initiative and must have a positive attitude
  • A valid code 08 driver’s license.
