Garth Holmes, co-founder of AFDA, shares some advice for aspiring filmmakers! If you're wanting to build a career within the film industry, AFDA could be a very good place for you to start at.
Holmes says that if you have a camera and access to editing facilities, "just get out there and do it". He acknowledges that this suits certain personalities such as people who are extremely driven.
To be a success in the film industry, you need to have grit and resilience, not take no for an answer.
Garth says you should be prepared to take low positions in the film industry to work your way up and that you should also take the chance with any gaps you might get.
Education is also a very important option as it gives you more guarantees and also helps build your confidence and ideas. You can also build your network of your peer group and generation.
So that you not kind of appropriating a whole bunch of ideas from a generation that is not necessarily relevant to you. Not that they're wrong, it just doesn't have the same integrity as your own generation.
Universities and colleges give people an environment to develop and fail which is important for growth.
AFDA is a school that offers courses in film, television, performance, business innovation and technology, radio and podcasting.
