Financing your studies is a major part of your journey and could cause a lot of stress. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme, known as NSFAS, is trying to take this stress away.

NSFAS provides bursaries to students who come from poor or working class backgrounds. However, will they fund students from the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT)?

Fortunately, they do. NSFAS funds all 26 Public South African Universities and MUT falls under this category.

The criteria to be funded by NSFAS is as follows:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must be accepted or applying to a Public South African University
  • SASSA grant beneficiaries are immediately accepted
  • Household income must come to below R350 000 per year
    • People with disabilities need to have a household income which comes to below R600 000 per year

The NSFAS bursary covers more than just your tuition. They will also pay the following:

  • Registration fees
  • Accommodation allowance
  • Learning material/book allowance
  • Personal or incidental allowance
  • Living allowance
  • Transport allowance

NSFAS applications usually open in August or September every year for University students.

Visit the NSFAS website for more information or go to MUT's NSFAS page.
