Fundile Gade, the Eastern Cape Education MEC, briefed the media about progress made and processes after the final day of marking examination papers. The MEC outlined the departmental plans for the 2021 academic year, as well as the readiness of schools to reopen.
The National Planning Commission (NPC) applauded the government for inroads made in improving South Africa’s access to education. NPC believes that by improving access to education will help reduce the high inequality levels in the country.
Originally the Education Department said they hoped independent schools would delay their opening dates for term one, but they couldn't force them. Now the government has released regulations that specify when private schools can open - and those who have opened early will have to close again.
Some teachers are now showing concern and are worried that even with the delayed reopening of schools, returning to schools still won't be safe for them. Teachers are due back at schools on 1 February with learners following on 15 February.
On Wednesday, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and Department of Social Development presented to the Portfolio Committee to address challenges applicants experienced when reapplying for the Temporary Disability Grants.
