What Can Students Gain From Completing An Apprenticeship?


An apprenticeship is referred to a program that is used to train an individual to become skilled within a particular trade industry. Apprenticeships are considered full-time jobs as most of their training is done whilst working. The employer oversees the artisan and helps them gain the necessary knowledge needed in order to succeed in their chosen trade industry. Although they are learning, they must apply what they have learnt from their lessons into their working environment. 


What is the duration of completing an apprenticeship?

Depending on the training required and receiving the certification, it depends on various factors. For example; the industry and the program has an impact on how long the apprenticeship will last. It usually takes 4 years to complete, however it may vary anywhere between 1 to 6 years. 

Apprenticeship program structure:

In order to determine how long an apprenticeship will be, there are 3 basic programs to work from, namely:

Time-based programs: This means that your apprenticeship must be completed within a given period of time or a certain number of hours. 
Competency-based programs: An artisan can work at their own pace however, they must present a certain level of expertise.
Hybrid approach: This program consists of both time-based and competency based. Your apprenticeship must be completed within a given period of time and demonstrate your level of expertise.

What can students gain from completing an apprenticeship?

Learning from a skilled employer will help the artisan gain the in-depth knowledge and understanding of how to master their trade.  Some of the benefits of completing an apprenticeship is earning money whilst working, gaining valuable skills in your chosen trade industry, it gives you a head start in your chosen career and learning from qualified tradespeople. Once the apprenticeship has been completed, the artisan will receive a certificate which indicates they are highly skilled in their chosen trade industry. 

Apprenticeships help many businesses employ skilled workers who meet their requirements. It is a good way of gaining general workplace experience, understanding how a trade industry works and improving your interpersonal skills.
