South Africa is currently experiencing a shortage of skilled tradespeople and therefore graduates from trade apprenticeship programmes are in high demand. A career in trade can offer a secure and well paid future. Popular apprenticeships include electricians, engineers, mechanics, welders, and many more. Many major companies offer apprenticeship training including Transnet, Eskom, SAB, Toyota and others.

An apprenticeship combines workplace and institutional learning in a national qualification.

An apprenticeship is based on an agreement between the individual who wants to learn the skill and the employer who needs a skilled worker.

An apprenticeship can last from two to four years, depending on the program.

As an apprentice, about 90 per cent of the learners time is spent learning practical skills, while being supervised by a qualified tradesperson.

The rest is spent learning theoretical and technical aspects of your trade.

What Jobs Have Apprenticeships?

There are many jobs where apprenticeships are needed.  These include electricians, welders, plumbers, engineers, IT, mechanics, and others. Qualified people are hard to find in this positions so if you have completed an internship you will find it easy to get a job.

Apprenticeships are usually limited to technical trades and learners are forced to work out a fixed period of time before they can receive their qualification.

Apprenticeships are job orientated, but learners earn a salary while they get an education.

Many top companies need qualified apprentices so they offer apprenticeship training to make sure they have enough staff to meet their needs. Large companies such as Transnet, Eskom, Barloworld, Toyota, SAB and Mercedes-Benz and just some of the companies that are well know to train a lot of apprentices.
