The University of South Africa (UNISA) is a distance education university with over 200 000 students enrolled country- and world - wide.
Although its main campus is in Pretora, UNISA has Provincial Centres in Florida (in Gauteng), Durban, Cape Town, Polokwane, Nelspruit, Mafikeng, Kimberley, Port Elizabeth and Bloemfontein. Traditionally, UNISA focussed on adult education, but recently its target market has included people aged 24 and younger.
Women also account for slightly more than 55% of total registrations, while black students (Africans, Coloured, Indians) make up 73%, and owing to its flexibility, just over 1000 disabled learners are currently enrolled.
In terms of its academic offering, UNISA offers a combination of career-orientated courses usually associated with a university of technology, combined with general formative academic programmes typically linked to a traditional university.
