The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has confirmed how much university allowances will be for September 2024.

NSFAS offers comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving students enrolled in accredited programmes at public universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges in South Africa.

NSFAS confirmed that universities will be responsible for paying student allowances for the remainder of the 2024 academic year. This means that students registered at one of South Africa’s 26 public universities will receive allowance payments directly from their institution.

How Much Are NSFAS Allowances?

For university students, the living allowance will be R16,500 annually, which includes R3,045 for personal care and R13,455 for meals. Additionally, university students receive a learning material allowance of up to R5,460.

Students who choose to make their accommodation arrangements with immediate family or with relatives do not qualify for the accommodation allowance. Instead, these students qualify for a travel allowance determined by the institution, up to a maximum of R7,875 in 2024.

Special provisions are made for students with disabilities, who receive higher living allowances and an additional learning materials allowance.

It's important to note that these amounts are the annual amounts. NSFAS divided these annual allowance amounts into ten equal instalments.
