The Cape Wine Academy has secured funding from the Department of Tourism and the Expanded Public Works Programme to train 200 unemployed people from townships within the Cape and Gauteng regions to Wine Advisors – level 1 Cape Sommelier™ qualification.
Marilyn Cooper, Cape Wine Master and CEO of the Cape Wine Academy says; “It is our passion and goal to truly help transform the wine industry. We see this as a project that will impact positively on the wine industry in South Africa significantly raising the level of knowledge and service across the board.”
This 12-month project will include the following intense courses – the Wine Service course, Preliminary Wine Course, Certificate Wine Course, Front of House, Marketing and the Wines of the World Course.
It will also incorporate four six-week practical work segments in the wine industry with distributors and wholesalers such as Distell, Meridian and DGB, Vinimark, Smollens, Liquidity, Panniers, Wine Logistics, Swirls, Nixan Wines, Nicholsen Smith, International Wines, together with Beyerskloof, Delheim, Simonsig, Vergelegen, Spier all taking learners for the first practical which has been completed. These practicals will also include front of house training in restaurants, retailers and hotels such as Southern Sun, Ultra Liquors, Spar, Shoprite Checkers, Butcher Shop and Grill and the Baron’s group.
The Cape Wine Academy has signed up the best hospitality lecturers, including Cape Wine Masters, Lizette Tolken and Derek Ramsden to ensure that the students get the best education to enable them to compete professionally anywhere in South Africa and the world. From the second module these lecturers will all be of colour, having been facilitators for the first three months. These include qualified Cape Sommeliers and Diploma graduates.
In order for candidates to qualify, they had to be unemployed, be between the ages of 18-34 years, South African and must commit for the full 12-month training programme.
The training centres are in Soweto, Tembisa, Randburg, Mitchell’s Plain, Gugulethu and Langa. They receive R100 per day from the project.
“With a little bit of luck and lots of hard work and dedication, we hope this program will extend to include other areas in 2013", says Cooper.
If you would like to be part of this program and take candidates for a six week practical, please contact Sibongile Khumalo on 0110243616.
