Young people gathered to celebrate and commemorate the titans of the 1976 uprising through song and dance when the new youth day song produced by local artists in conjunction with SABC1 Mzansi Fo Sho was released at the youth month campaign.
Youth month signals a time of reflection and renewal.
It is a time to remember the ones who suffered and died to bring freedom to the nation; a time to contemplate the political, social and economic status of young people and a time to consider the challenges still facing the youth today.
It also a time to renew hope and commitment to empowering young people and seeing them thrive in society.
In an effort to encapsulate the meaning of youth month, commemorate the 1976 student uprising and spark new hope in young South Africans SABC1 Mzansi Fo Sho joined up with local artists to produced the creative "All I Can Be” hip hop track.
The collaboration is meant to “inspire and encourage the modern day youth to face their challenges head-on with the view to overcoming them - in the spirit of the youth of 1976.”
The collective artists dubbed “June 16 All Stars” consisted of the cream of Mzansi’s hip hop artists including Amu, Pro, Mr Selwyn, Driemanskap, Nthabiseng, Kabomo, Flabba, TP, and Khanyi & Primus.
The shooting of a video which took place in the Soweto school nearby Vilakazi Street where it all began continued the theme of the 76 Uprisings, also emphasised by the slogan of the innovative youth campaign “I Rap to the Heartbeat of those Who Spoke (up) before Me,”
“The commemoration of June 16 has followed a more or less similar pattern over the years and the majority of our youth were finding it increasingly hard to connect,” says Dichaba Phalatse – Portfolio Marketing Manager responsible for Entertainment. “We realized that the youth today are exposed to a different set of challenges and we needed to come up with a creative concept to capture the Spirit of 76 and transport it into 2012 to galvanize and inspire the youth of today.”
