For many people a military career is very appealing as it provides a challenging and stable career option, while also having the advantage of knowing that you are serving your country. The four branches of the military in South Africa are the Army, Navy, Air Force and Military Health Service. Careers in the military often start with the Military Skills Development Programme which is a large scheme that recruits many young people into the four branches of the military each year.

The Military Skills Development System (MSDS) programme 2024/2025 is a two-year voluntary service system with the long-term goal of enhancing the SA National Defence Forces deployment capability. This could be the Army, Navy, Air Force or Military Health Service. Details of this year's programme have been announced.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) comprises the armed forces of South Africa. It's object is to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of South Africa and its people.
