Nelson Mandela Scholarship Fund Exchange Programme

The Mandela Scholarship Fund is available for Exchange and Study Abroad students from South Africa who would like to pursue one semester of their studies at Leiden University in the Netherlands. The scholarship will be awarded for a maximum of 5 months.

General conditions:

You must be:

  • A permanent resident of South Africa
  • Enrolled at a South African University
  • Accepted for a semester programme at Leiden University as an Exchange or Study Abroad student
  • Willing to upgrade or extend your knowledge in order to make a contribution towards the development of South Africa
  • Committed to returning to South Africa after your study period at Leiden University.

Scholarship amount:

Exchange students

  • International travel costs: € 1000
  • Living allowance : € 800 monthly (max. 5 months)
  • Insurance: will be sponsored by AON Student Insurance and arranged by Student and Educational Affairs.

Study Abroad students:

  • Tuition fee: € 6000
  • International travel costs: € 1000
  • Living allowance: € 800 monthly (max. 5 months).
  • Insurance: will be sponsored by AON Student Insurance and arranged by Student and Educational Affairs.

Application procedure:

The required application documents are:

  • Application form (in Word-Format OR PDF format) (including a letter of Motivation)
  • Admission letter for a Study Abroad or exchange programme at Leiden University
  • 2 original letters of recommendation (of which one should be from an academic staff member)
  • Transcript of academic records
  • Up-to-date Curriculum vitae
  • Photocopy of your valid passport and any other passports, if you have dual nationality
  • Copy of results of other scholarship/grant applications
  • Proof that you can support yourself financially if the Mandela Scholarship is not sufficient to cover all expenses. Proof can be: a letter stating that you receive a student grant mentioning the exact amount you receive; or a recent bank statement in your own name showing that you have sufficient funds to cover your expenses in
  • The Netherlands; or a notary statement declaring that your parents have sufficient funds to support you.

Deadline:

  • 15 October 2012 for programmes starting in February 2013
  • 1 April 2013 for programmes starting in September 2013 and February 2014.
